when does an espresso machine make sense in the office?
An espresso machine works well in companies where staff enjoy making coffee. That might be an agency that receives clients, a showroom, a reception area or a coworking space with its own kitchen or bar. It also suits offices where a shared coffee is part of the working day.
The basic requirement is someone responsible for the equipment: an office manager, a receptionist or a team that shares the duties. You need to agree who makes the drinks, tidies the station and does the daily cleaning.
For every coffee you need to prepare the portafilter and start the shot, and for milk drinks you also need to steam the milk. The right grinder and frother take over some of these steps.
If nobody in the company wants to deal with coffee and cleaning, a bean-to-cup machine will be the better choice. La Marzocco does not make bean-to-cup machines.
bean-to-cup or espresso machine in the office?
The two options differ in how the coffee is made and in how many steps the user has to take.
| Criterion | Bean-to-cup | Espresso machine |
|---|---|---|
| Making coffee | drink selected with a button | grinding, locking in the portafilter, starting the shot; Swift grinds, doses and tamps at the touch of a button |
| Who can operate it | anyone, with no preparation | anyone after brief training |
| Consistency | settings stored in the machine | AV version: programmed doses |
| Milk | steamed inside the machine | steam wand or Wally Milk at the touch of a button |
| Daily cleaning | according to the machine's manual | backflush, portafilters, steam wand: a few minutes a day |
If nobody wants to look after the machine, choose a bean-to-cup.
how do you match a machine to the office and the number of coffees?
We recommend the simplest machine that can handle the number of coffees made. One group is enough when coffees are made one at a time and spread throughout the day. Two groups help at peak times, for example in the morning or after meetings, when several people want to make coffee at once.
| Team size / situation | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Very small team, few coffees | Linea Micra or Linea Mini |
| Coffees spread throughout the day | 1-group Linea Classic S |
| Morning queues, several people making coffee at once | 2-group Linea Classic S |
| Larger office or busy coworking space | Linea PB with the number of groups matched to your needs |
| Reception or showroom where the look of the counter matters | Modbar |
| Nobody wants to look after the machine | bean-to-cup machine |
The number of people in the company is only a starting point. The number of groups depends on how many coffees are made at once. Read more in the guide how many groups you need.
which la marzocco models suit an office?
Linea Micra and Linea Mini for a very small team
The Linea Micra and Linea Mini are La Marzocco home machines that can be an option for a very small team making few coffees. We confirm the terms for business use in our quote. You will find a comparison of both models in the guide Linea Micra or Linea Mini.
Linea Classic S as an office espresso machine
The Linea Classic S comes in 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-group versions, in EE and AV variants. The AV version has programmable volumetric doses and an extraction timer. Once the doses are set, the machine delivers the same volume whoever is making the coffee. This is useful in an office where several people use the machine.
The Linea Classic S has two boilers, saturated groups and PID control of coffee and steam temperature. In the 1-group version the coffee boiler holds 1.8 l and the steam boiler 3.5 l, and the machine runs on 220 V single-phase power. In the 2-group version the coffee boiler holds 3.4 l and the steam boiler 7 l. The electronics board is ready to connect to the La Marzocco Pro App.
For an office where coffees are made throughout the day without big queues, we suggest the 1-group version. When several people use the machine at the same time, the 2-group version will be better.
Linea PB for a larger office and coworking space
The Linea PB is available with two, three or four groups. It works well in a larger office or coworking space where the coffee station handles a lot of traffic. It has an automatic group cleaning programme and an eco mode with programmable standby.
Modbar for reception areas and showrooms
Modbar lets you hide the espresso, steam and hot water modules under the counter. Only the spouts are visible above it. It is a solution for reception areas, showrooms and company kitchens where the look of the station matters. The modules are best planned in at the joinery design stage, together with space for the grinder.
how can you make an espresso machine easier to use in the office?
In an office the machine is often used by people with no barista experience. The right equipment helps them make consistent coffees.
La Marzocco Swift grinder
At the press of a button, the Swift grinds the coffee, measures the dose and tamps it in the portafilter. It has 64 mm flat ceramic burrs and works with all La Marzocco machines. Someone with no experience does not have to weigh the coffee or tamp it by hand. Read more about choosing a grinder in the guide espresso grinders.
Wally Milk for automatic milk steaming
Wally Milk connects to the machine and uses steam from its boiler. It detects the amount of milk in the jug and steams it at the press of a button. It handles cow's milk and plant-based drinks and stores up to 20 recipes. Details in the guide on steaming milk.
In a company where many people use the machine, you can combine a Linea Classic S AV, a Swift grinder and Wally Milk. We train the team at installation, and it is worth leaving a short guide next to the machine.
what should you check before installing an office machine?
Café machines such as the Linea Classic S and Linea PB need a water supply, a drain and a water filter matched to the water in the building. When planning the station, check:
- water supply and drain;
- a power socket suitable for the chosen model;
- space for the machine and grinder;
- space for milk in the fridge;
- room to make coffee comfortably.
First check the available connections, then plan the joinery. This matters especially in a reception area or showroom, where the coffee station is part of the interior. You will find the full list in the guide preparing your venue for an espresso machine.
what does daily cleaning of an espresso machine involve?
Basic cleaning takes a few minutes a day:
- Backflush. Removes coffee residue from the group.
- Washing the portafilters. After service, remove coffee residue and wash the portafilters.
- Wiping the steam wand. After every time you steam milk.
The Linea PB has an automatic group cleaning programme that makes backflushing easier. The portafilters and steam wand are cleaned separately. You will find the schedule in the guide cleaning and backflush.
